The BBC "Taraneh" documentary and the "reformist" backlash
In December 2025 BBC Persian aired "Taraneh", Pegah Ahangarani's documentary in which Alidoosti appeared unveiled, recounted her 2022 arrest and called the uprising a revolution. Alongside wide praise, it set off one of the largest Persian Twitter waves about her: Jamaran counted over 100,000 tweets in four days. Hardline media attacked her for unveiling and for working with BBC, while many suppor
- Background: Ahangarani, a 2009 Mousavi campaigner, is arrested - The Guardian reported that director Pegah Ahangarani, an outspoken supporter of the opposition Green Movement who had publicly campaigned for Mir Hossein Mousavi in 2009, was arrested in Tehran while preparing to cover the Women's World Cup in Germany; she was freed on bail about two weeks later. In December 2025 critics of the documentary cited her reformist campaign record, and Alidoosti's, against both women. Iranian actor arrested en route to women's World Cup
- BBC Persian airs Ahangarani's documentary "Taraneh" - BBC Persian aired "Taraneh", a 50-minute documentary by Pegah Ahangarani in which Alidoosti, unveiled on camera, speaks for the first time about joining the protests after Mahsa Amini's death, her arrest in front of her daughter and an autoimmune skin disease. In the film she says "I will never play with hijab, under any circumstances", calls the 2022 uprising "Mahsa's revolution", recalls international feminist groups calling it "the world's first feminist revolution", and says being banned by the Ministry of Culture does not mean "erasure" for her. RFE/RL reported she was widely praised for her defiance. ترانه علیدوستی به روایت پگاه آهنگرانی؛ در هیچ شرایطی «با حجاب بازی نخواهم کرد»
- First wave on X: "Ayatollah BBC" and "controlled opposition" - Within a day, accounts sympathetic to Reza Pahlavi framed the film as a reformist and BBC project. @Azadlavasani (post with about 3,500 likes) wrote that critics had a right to suspect the whole "Taraneh Alidoosti project and the interview with Ayatollah BBC" was an intelligence ministry plan, asking why it did not attack the Islamic Republic. @Hila1363 wrote: "The scenario was written in advance and the roles carefully divided. Actor: Taraneh Alidoosti, director: Pegah Ahangarani, broadcast: BBC." @Savakzadeh called it "Controlled opposition at work" and posted a clip of her mourning Rafsanjani. Azadlavasani on the Taraneh documentary
- "A classic reformist celebrity": the core charge - Critics argued that Alidoosti and Ahangarani were reformists recast as revolutionaries. Ehsan Zareei wrote that Alidoosti "has been a classic reformist celebrity" and that a film about her was made, broadcast by the BBC and promoted by "holders of white SIM cards" (a jibe at users with privileged unfiltered internet). Another widely shared post (@trumpnejad) said the interview had "woken the reformists from hibernation". Hamvatan24 reported that the main weapon used against both women was their past campaigning for Mousavi in 2009 and Hassan Rouhani in 2013. Ehsan Zareei: a classic reformist celebrity
- Hardline media demand action over her unveiling - Beytoote reported that Fars News published a demand for action against Alidoosti over removing her hijab, saying the "silence of the Culture Ministry, the judiciary and responsible bodies" normalized crossing the red lines of national security. Journalist Shahed Alavi (125,000 followers) listed Alidoosti, Ahangarani and other actresses who unveiled as "those who chose"; historian Arash Azizi called it wonderful to see "two great actors of my generation" together; actress Nazanin Boniadi said the film showed "the movement is alive". واکنشها به پخش مستند ترانه علیدوستی از بیبیسی فارسی
- The "ten years" line: critics vs. what she said - Monarchist commentator @Sativa888 wrote that at the end of the film Alidoosti "explicitly showed her reformist stance and said that 'these changes' might even take ten years", adding: "The 'ten years' of extra time you're giving the mullah regime is our life and youth." The same account called the film a reformist bid to present her to the West "as a new leader". In the BBC transcript the remark comes in a passage about cinema: "It hasn't even been three years... Imagine even ten more years go by. In the cultural history of a country, what is that?", referring to changing the visual habits of Iranian film. Sativa888 on the ten years remark

It cited reformist Saeed Shariati's tweet "out of respect for Taraneh Alidoosti and her resistance" and documentary maker Hossein Dehbashi's ironic reply: "Only a genuine reformist can write in memory of Woman, Life, Freedom with a white SIM card." Mehdi Mahdavi-Azad said on the programme: "Many supporters of Prince Reza Pahlavi believe reformists are 'leader-making' against him and view figures like Narges Mohammadi or Taraneh Alidoosti with suspicion. We must ask how real this suspicion is, and whether we are facing an organised game." Iran International: Mahdavi-Azad on the Alidoosti backlash

- 100,000 tweets in four days: Jamaran's discourse analysis - A Jamaran analysis by Mohammad Taghizadeh, republished by Khabar Online, counted over 100,000 Persian tweets and retweets with nearly 50 million views between 3 and 7 Dey 1404. It said the main line of attack was her collaboration with BBC Persian ("unveiled in front of which camera? The one BBC paid for?"), alongside old photos used to call her two-faced, the Shahrzad funding row and claims her illness was a bid for pity; praise dominated at first and conflict grew later, with part of the monarchist camp distancing itself from her. یک مستند و ۱۰۰ هزار توییت؛ چرا ترانه علیدوستی اینقدر حساسیتبرانگیز شد؟

Translation award and the "celebrity sells" charge
